Help me support St John Ambulance so their volunteers, like Sarah, can save more likes like Bob. 

72 year old Bob Dewane had been to the Pompey match on 20 September 2025 and was walking over Fratton Bridge when his heart sudenly stopped. 

“I remember absolutely nothing,” he said. “I was told I was gone for 10 minutes.” 

As former police officer, Bob had carried out CPR himself during his career many times. “I know how hard it is. I’m grateful for Sarah’s skills and stamina to keep going.” 

Sarah Taylor, St John Ambulance volunteer, was on her way to celebrate her birthday after having volunteered at a community demonstraion event. Sarah, who was in her St John Ambulance uniform, was stopped by a passer byer who thought she was on her way to help Bob.

 “I just went into autopilot,” she said. “He needed help, so we got on with it.”

At home, his family were told to prepare for the worst. His daughter Amy said: “We didn’t know if he’d wake up. We didn’t know what state he’d be in.” 

Bob suffered fractured ribs from CPR and had no memory of the first few days. But after triple bypass surgery, he is now recovering at home with his wife and daughters by his side. 

“None of this would be relevant if it hadn’t been for Sarah Taylor” he said. “This was the first time I needed St John. And boy did I need them.” 

That is why I am fundraising for St John so more people are trained to support people when they need them. So more lives can be saved.
